Poor Mr. Toby. He’s been trying to adjust to the absence of his favorite neighbors, who vacated their house about 10 days ago. As a result, he’s been staying closer to home for the past week. In any case, here’s a set of the latest cat photos. One shows Leo intimidating poor Mr. Romeo, who actually outweighs Leo by quite a bit but is usually a bit timid. Just click on Leo for more.
Crystal Kua reports on Mayor Hannemann’s fundraiser in today’s Star-Bulletin. Well, her story is in the S-B, not the fundraiser. Mufi says he’s not looking beyond the 2008 election and is campaigning hard, taking no chances.
Kua quotes Ed Case, who is reluctant to get into this race:
“I know there is a strong possibility I wouldn’t fill out the (mayor’s) term,” Case said. “With the governor’s race in 2010 and the congressional races ongoing, to run for mayor on a four-year term knowing I may well not finish that term doesn’t seem to me to be the right thing to do.”
So it’s possible Hannemann will roll into a scond term without serious opposition, for good or ill.
A Star-Bulletin Newswatch brief on Saturday reported that OIP director Les Kondo has been named to the Public Utilities Commission effective immediately, although a formal announcement hasn’t been made yet.
One reader says: “my impression is that he’s been generally good for oip – might find some others to comment?”
Don’t miss the story by Sy Hersh about General Taguba with his description of putting together the report on abuse at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison.
Finally, I ran into this column pointing to possible Hawaii ties to the controversy over the Bush Administration’s politically-motivated firings of U.S. attorneys, which could also impact the investigations of public corruption in Saipan and Guam. Interesting reading.

It’s been said before but it bears repeating: Mr. Toby is a very handsome cat.
