Thursday…David Black says he is in a buying mode, go phishing, and more morning dogs

June 28th, 2007 · 2 Comments · General

Star-Bulletin owner David Black is at it again, this time taking aim at a chain of 54 newspapers in Ontario, Canada. Black bested a previous bidder with an offer of $405 million (Canadian) or $378 million (US). according to the New York Times today.

The Akron Beacon Journal, another Black property, reports this comment:

Black said he is in a buying mode.

“I am bullish for newspapers,” he said. Black said he is looking to purchase other newspapers, including in the United States, “but there’s limits to the kind of capital we can bring. I’m quite interested in the field. I think newspapers have a great future. I know I’m beginning to be a bit of a minority there. It’s time to buy for me.

Speaking of the Star-Bulletin, one reader thinks it has the best headline writers in town.

Example – over yesterday’s story about Ms. Hilton getting out of jail:

Paris Liberated!

Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell where that headline originated. A Google search shows it was used by Hollywood Today, CBC, and several other news outlets.

A clumsy phishing (or pfishing) attempt came yesterday in the form of an email posing as an online verification form from the Honolulu City & County credit union:

Go Pfishing

What made this one unusual was the poor disguising of that vital link to what is supposedly the credit union web site. In this case, it was easy to trace the link to a form on this otherwide legit-appearing web site which is disguised to look like it belongs to the credit union. DO NOT ENTER ANY ACCOUNT INFO IN THE FAKE PAGE!!

I hope security folks at the real credit union are going after this one.

Morning dogs

How have I gone this whole month without a dog update? Somehow it happened. So here’s another batch of our favorite morning dogs. This treo waits faithfully every morning. If we’re gone or not walking for some reason, we’re told that they get pretty upset. But they seem to quickly forgive and forget. So click on the photo for more.

Paris? Liberated? Probably more so when she was IN jail, than when she got out. But, was she ever really “in”? Sorry, just too ironic to pass.

You know, one of the reasons I stopped subscribing to home delivery, was the plastic bag. Now every paper, every day is encased in at least one, sometimes two, plastic bags. I would guess that most are never even necessary. On some days, none are. It was a constant battle to get the delivery people to just put it in a dry spot. When I was a kid we delivered papers (oh boy here we go) and we had to find a way without plastic bags, Was no big problem that I recall. It’s kind of scary just how much plastic that is.

Little niggle. Proper term is “phishing”. I’ve been getting those HFCU come-ons for over a year now.
