I gather that the military is one institution we are supposed to be able all to support. It’s easier than ideas–like democracy, like free speech, like equality–but I’d much rather hear paeans to those from Mazie and the Dans.

It’s obligatory nowadays to recognize the contributions active and retired military personnel are making to keep us free.

While it can be a bit overplayed, very few politicians would want to be accused of not being patriotic.

It also begs the question of where is the equivalent accolades to all in our society to contribute to our safety, health, peace, prosperity, etc., such as police, firefighters, teachers, water safety officers, etc.?

I am thankful that my Representative in Congress - Mazie Hirono - voted in support of the McGovern/Lewis amendment to shut down the torture-training School of the Americas: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll536.xml It's just too bad the effort came up a little short of the necessary votes this year.
