Wednesday…21 hours without power

December 5th, 2007 · 2 Comments · General

It was a very long day. Twenty-one hours without power, from about 11 p.m. tuesday night through approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Everyone in our part of the neighborhood is talking about the micro-burst that blasted through here about 3:30 a.m.

It brought, many agree, hurricane force winds that just sheered off large tree branches on its way though. Most of us would have been okay if this last powerful segment of the storm had taken a different path.

I did have internet access via my Sprint broadband card and Macbook Pro, but with limited battery life I confined computer use to checking the NOAA weather and similar uses. No battery power used for normal online access.

I really do need some power source for such occasions.

Once again, repeat after me…”This time, we really are going to invest in a generator!”

Now repeat that 300 times.

I think the power kicked on in time to save what was in our refigerator.

But we’ll see.

Okay, you’re now ready to live in Kaaawa.

Hopefully we’re back online first thing Thursday morning.

You need to pick up one of those XO laptops. They come with a hand crank…about a minute of cranking gets you 10 minutes of battery use.

    Hi Ian,John here on Maui.

I have always wanted to have a poor mans solar system; a solar panel hooked to a couple of batteries, a decent inverter, (pure sine wave) and romex through the house with plugs in appropriate locations, for example where the phone is, computer area where wireless is, and maybe strategically located lights in hallways etc. It could be used normally depending on the charging of the batteries so it would get worked, not like a generator in the garage storeroom that we may drag out occasionally.

    Just an idea.
