Word from the Star-Bulletin is that longtime court reporter Debra Barayuga is quitting at the end of the year. It’s another real loss, as she’s been carrying a lot of water for the paper.
Remember the Canal House condominium, the building that was having elevator problems that forced residents to use the stairs and later had to run one elevator manually in order to service residents? According to a discussion over at Hawaii Threads, the elevators are still not fixed. For some, it’s become a health issue. No clear indication of why fixing the elevators has turned into such an unending job. Maybe some enterprising reporters will check it out.
According to a report yesterday, the Miami Herald will be outsourcing some sections to workers in New Delhi. Can Gannett be far behind?
Speaking of Gannett, the chain is reporting a 27 percent drop in real estate advertising. Yes, newspapers have been among the victims of the subprime mortgage mess. In Seattle, there is talk of big cuts coming at the Seattle Times. And there’s a Newspaper Guild organizing project underway in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to this account in Reclaim the Media.
