June 23rd, 2008 · 1 Comment · General

Noted: The deaths yesterday of Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste and comedian and commentator George Carlin. We sat outside our small room at the Maui Seaside late yesterday and watched the Superferry’s Sunday evening arrival. I couldn’t see passengers coming off the ferry, but counted just short of 100 vehicles, including a couple of commercial trucks. [...]

[Something strange happened this morning. I posted an entry, and it later disappeared. I didn't learn about it until I checked my email and had an inquiry from Aaron Stene in Kona wondering what had happened. I don't know what happened, but I'm trying to recreate the entry, which might take a few minutes or [...]

We’ve taken the opportunity to slip away for the weekend. I won’t say where we are, yet. But here’s a clue. We drove past this building and the faded lettering caught my eye: “Cec Heftel for Governor”. A message that dates back more than two decades. You can click on the photo to see a [...]

I didn’t see the news item last week reporting that the Campaign Spending Commission was investigating the Senate campaign of Big Island Rep Dwight Takamine for accepting contributions from a union that exceeded the legal limit. A Google search turned up this story with the headline, “Takamine accused of campaign finance violation.” Unfortunately for the [...]

Chuck Freedman, local Obama campaigner and staffer for House Majority Leader Kirk Caldwell, has an interesting column that appeared in his hometown newspaper, Greenwich Time (CT) linking his high school experience as caddie for Jackie Robinson to his current support for Barack Obama. I haven’t found it online yet, but luckily Chuck sent along a [...]

Former Star-Bulletin assistant managing editor Rich Somerville died over the weekend at his home in California. I got the news from John Hollon, former executive editor at the Advertiser. Here is John’s note: I knew Rich from when we both were at The Advertiser in the mid-1990s, and I kept in touch with him over [...]

Tuesday…anti-labor sourcing, 96% interest loans, remember when, and another Kaaawa canine video

I noticed a revealing item in a Star-Bulletin story this morning. The story is a straight forward account of a U.S. Department of Labor ruling disqualifying a candidate for a Laborers’ Union office because of a prior felony conviction. Oliver Kupau III has been a business agent for the union local before running for a [...]

June 16th, 2008 · No Comments · General

Meda was reading one of the Sunday newspapers after our morning walk yesterday when she looked across to the kitchen. I was busy. A batch of brownies had just gone in the oven in preparation for our drive into town to deliver a Father’s Day lunch to my parents. I had four strips of turkey [...]
