Great post Ian,
Love this site. State by state polling showing dems winning, Frank Rich calling out McCain, and turkey legs! Who could ask for anything more?

You wrote: "Perhaps you want to rethink your position in light of this new evidence."

It's always problematic to use a particular example and extrapolate that to a generality. Yes, it may very well be true that McCain could win the popular vote and lose the electoral vote.

But that's what happened to Gore in 2000. You could easily (and accurately) have said that if the popular vote had been in place in 2000, Gore would have been president.

One can only wonder what this country would look like had that happened.

The fundamental premise behind the popular vote is a simple one: you get the most votes, you win. And it's a premise that holds true for thousands of local, state and federal political races.

After all, if the electoral college approach is still the best approach, why hasn't any state used a mini-version to elect, say, its governor.

The average State House district in Hawaii is 2.5 Wasilla units. That means any Hawaii State legislator could be qualified to run for the Vice President of the United States.
