October 28th, 2008 · No Comments · General

Honolulu Advertiser Publisher Lee Webber sent an email to staff this morning forwarding a letter from Gannett’s publishing division president, Bob Dickey. Here’s Lee’s email and a link to Dickey’s letter. Bottom line: 10% nationwide staff cut in 30 days. As you can see from today’s headline, Hawaii is suffering the same economic slide as [...]

You’ve gotta love this one–the recording of John McCain’s brother’s call to 911 because he’s pissed off at being stuck in traffic. Then he curses at the operator when told 911 is for emergencies only. And did you notice Advertiser editor Mark Platte’s Sunday column regarding the newspaper’s evolving policy regarding online comments? [Warning: the [...]

Monday…Thinking about blogging and money

October 27th, 2008 · No Comments · General

In response to a question after my Saturday afternoon presentation at Podcamp Hawaii, I admitted that I don’t make any money off this site. Well, enough to pay for the few dollars a month I pay to a hosting service, but no “real” money. Someone followed up by asking whether I would like to be [...]

Sunday…More from SNL, mail from readers, yet another meal in Kaaawa

First thing–sit down at watch George W. Bush endorsement of the McCain-Palin ticket. From Saturday Night Live, of course. The news this morning seems full of bad polling news for John McCain and reports of Sarah Palin going “rogue” by straying from McCain’s prepared script. The “rogue diva” is a title she’s apparently now sporting. [...]

A quiet Sunday. Just back from watching the sunrise down at the beach. Regular post follows soon, but in the meantime, a photo. As usual, just click for a larger version. No green flash today, although it looked like we might get one. [Oops. That was very embarrassing. When first posted, the link to the [...]

On the campaign trail, we got home Friday afternoon to find a telephone message featuring Senator Dan Inouye calling on behalf of Jessica Wooley, the Democratic candidate in the 47th House district. Go, Jessica! Have you noticed that Howard Dean is not getting his due in reporting on the current state of the presidential election? [...]

Friday…More cuts looming for state, Honolulu dailies, Mokulele news, campaign voices, Feline Friday

October 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment · General

I caught this in a short story in this morning’s Star-Bulletin on the University of Hawaii budget: [UH President David] McClain said UH economists believe the governor might have to double the 10 to 20 percent cuts currently being asked for to balance the state budget. Possible 40% budget cuts? Those won’t be cuts. Those [...]
