Sunday, early morning report. WIND.

January 11th, 2009 · 1 Comment · General

The forecasters who warned of rain this morning forgot to mention the wind.

It was the wind that woke us up about 2 a.m. with gusts that reminded me of the last hurricane that came our way. I think the mountains are at work here. Wind coming our way from over the mountains gain speed as it comes down the slope.

It’s now just 5 a.m. We’ve been up since 4:30 after checking the house every hour or so since 2. Scary gust just blew through. Maybe we should retreat downstairs, which is partially below grade.

Everything on the decks has been blown around or away. The Weber grill lid just slammed into the deck door. Cats are scared. I don’t blame them. I think Harriet is outside, hopefully hiding under the house.

More sounds of crashing outside. Not sure whether it’s stuff blowing or breaking.

By some miracle, we still have power.

Dawn still a couple of hours away.

I’m glad I’m not in a small boat caught at sea.

5:18 update

And suddenly it was quiet. Another big gust of wind, deck chairs blew, we cringed, and then it went still. Quiet. Like it blew itself out, at least for the moment. We’ll see.

5:27 a.m.

After 10 minutes of relative calm, I was able to coax Ms. Harry out from under the house and bring her inside out of the weather. She’s now shut in my bathroom with a bowl of food and her own towel to sleep on.

I was surprised to see that no avocados had come down in the windy, rainy storm. I still haven’t been able to determine if, now at 932 a.m., the storm is through with Oahu. Hear that Big Island is getting slammed now. My kitties stayed home, snuggled in the garage. Oh, and by the way, GO EAGLES!
