The "Barack O'Bama" song reminded me of my late mother who was surprised to learn that one of her favorite football players, Franco Harris, was not really an Irishman named Frank O'Harris. Quite embarassing when she finally saw him without his helmet.

While I consider him a friend (and he was my Rep. in Manoa), I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Kirk Caldwell as a potential MD.

For one thing, he is a "big picture" kind of guy and does not seem to be inclined to the details that the MD is intended to take care of for the mayor. For another, Kirk is too nice a guy. Not that he is obsessed with making people like him (as are some politicians) but he doesn't want anyone to be mad at him and he wants everyone to be happy. Notwithstanding your contrary assessment, I think that limited his effectiveness as Majority Leader in the House and I think it will be a problem when he tries to move the antiquated, leviathan city bureaucracy.

Basically, I think MD appointment is a reward for Kirk's failed attempt to run for the Manoa council seat and for his help on the rail ballot question. Or a tune up for a Lt. Governor run in 2010 opposite Mufi. Or both.
