An update on Mr. Leo

February 26th, 2009 · 1 Comment · General

We were able to get Leo to a vet as soon as VCA opened its doors at 7 a.m.

After an initial round of exams and tests, we were told that the prognosis is poor. Several vets consulted and agreed that the symptoms indicate a blood clot that has caused paralysis in his rear legs. His tail has also lost feeling, which we’re told is more unusual. And his body temperature was low, especially in those extremities, another bad sign. We will meet with the vets after work and decide his fate.

About 6 a.m., I thought he was dying. We had him wrapped in towels in an out of the way corner, and we took turns petting and comforting him. I could actually feel his body getting cooler as we sat there together. And for several minutes, he didn’t have the strength to lift his head. But later he seemed to gain a little more strength.

4:36 p.m. Another Leo update. The vets are puzzled. No one thing can account for the range of symptoms. Various electrolyte levels seem to be haywire and changing. Perhaps there’s a brain tumor or other malady, we don’t know.

Overall, though, his condition has deteriorated over the course of the day.

That was not the news we hoped to get.
