We stopped at VCA in Kaneohe yesterday afternoon just before 6 p.m. to talk with the vet who had been treating Leo all day. We took Pali Highway from downtown, so had to do a u-turn the intersection by Windward City Shopping Center and come back around to the VCA parking lot. As we slid into a parking stall and got out of the car, there was a rainbow just off a ways looking makai. It wasn’t all that bright, but it was enough. But by the time I pulled out my iPhone to get a snapshot, it had already faded. Somehow it highlighted all the emotions of the moment.
The news inside was mixed. The vets are puzzled by Leo’s case because there’s no one diagnosis that fits his symptoms, so there’s some chance, however slim, of at least a partial recovery. He was alert when we arrived, purred when we fussed over him, and even ate a token amount of food when we offered it. We decided to go another night and see if there’s been any break in his condition this morning, for better or worse.
Then it will be time for a decision, I’m afraid. But when we got on the road yesterday afternoon, I thought that was going to be the decision point. So who knows? Perhaps the rainbow knows.
I took this picture of Leo last Sunday, looking ahead to this week’s Feline Friday. He looked great. What a difference a few days can make. That’s an important lesson here.
Here’s one email I received late last night.
I lost my cats, Ehu and Goose almost 20 years ago and I still dream of them. Nothing anyone can say eases the pain. My heart is with you.
Thank you. And thanks to all of you who have offered support.

Hugs. I’ve always liked Leo. What a handsome guy, however neurotic he can sometimes be. It is so hard to say goodbye to a Fur Child. I wish your ohana well.
Awww! I’m sorry to hear about Leo. He was the favourite of one of my co-workers who loved his eyes.
Please think of us—your pet-loving readers—at Leo’s funeral.
p.s. Tiki sends his best, too.
Aloha Leo. Give my regards to Cybelle and the gang.
Thinking of you and yours.
