Let’s tax home maintenance and repair

April 9th, 2010 · No Comments · Politics

Here’s an idea for new revenue.

Let’s put a 1% tax on everything you spend to clean your home, maintain it’s interior and exterior, keep the lawn and garden under control, or make necessary repairs. House needs painting? Pay the tax. Change a lightbulb? Pay the tax. Buy cleaning supplies? Pay the tax. And boost the take by also taxing anything you set aside in savings to cover those household expenses.

Sounds a little crazy.

But that’s what a provision in SB2402 does to owners of condominium apartments by taxing all money paid for maintenance of the common areas shared by everyone in those buildings.

It’s hard to see the logic of this one.

But the bill is now in conference.

Live in a condominium? Time to let legislators know how you feel about this provision in SB2402.

Senate Conferees appointed: Kim, Chair; Fukunaga, Co-Chair(s); Kidani, Kokubun, Tsutsui, Hemmings.

House conferees have apparently not been appointed yet.
