I was able to post a comment a few minutes ago, and some new spam has also gotten through.
So it appears that the error that had been blocking new comments much of the day has been fixed.

WordPress obviously has gone through some changes in the last days. I wish they would allow us as bloggers to selectively change settings as they become available, instead of just changing things on us!
