Ms. Annie welcomes you to this week’s Feline Friday. After an overnight lockdown, with all the cats inside due to the bad weather, Annie and Romeo led the charge when we finally opened the doors this morning. Romeo immediately headed out for a check of the yard. Annie just got a few feet before turning around, as if to say, “Did you know it’s wet out here?”
If you notice a slightly different look to some of today’s photos, it is due to my new “toy,” a Canon 100mm macro lens that allows focusing at closer than normal distances. This is the first time I’ve used it, so I’m still getting used to how it handles.
For those who might be interested, it’s a used lens ordered online from KEH Camera. They are considered a reliable source for used equipment, and usually are able to offer a number of choices, each carefully rated by condition, and substantially less expensive than new equipment.
This lens was rated “like new” and, so far at least, I’m quite pleased.

100mm is too much for cats. A normal 50mm perspective is fine, you just have get a little lower, a cat’s eye view of the world. At that level, you will find that a wide angle view from 28mm to 40mm will be very interesting as well. Unfortuantely, lowering the view also brings body pains with bad knees, bad back or twisted neck muscles as we get older.
For those looking at or who have the Micro 4/3 or Sony NEX cameras, there are numerous adapters that are sold that allow you to use those old lenses from most 35mm cameras that had interchangeable lenses. Of course, the adapters vary in price and quality, so it pays to check which are the better ones.
Adapters allow the use of those old lenses in a manual mode on most of those M4/3 or NEX cameras. A lot of those lenses were quite good and since only the center portion of the lens is used in these formats, you will be surprised with the quality of the photos. Just remember, if the lens was “junk” when you used it with your 35mm camera, it will be be just as bad on the new digital camera. Junk meaning for me would be bad flare, poor resolution, low contrast or lots of fungus.
I love the pictures with the new zoom lens!
Not a zoom. It just allows close focusing. It’s images also seem to have a nice quality.
I’m in. I especially like the the way the cats’ eyes are rendered. It is strange to see photos with depth of field that is so limited (one or two eyes in focus but ears a complete blur).
