The year’s first “dirty trick” targets Ige campaign

There’s a gubernatorial election this year, with Gov. David Ige and Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa already going head to head.

And, perhaps not surprisingly, the dirty tricks have already begun.

This salvo, the first dirty trick of the campaign, comes in the form of an email throwing all kinds of unsubstantiated allegations at Ige’s campaign team, including broad allegations of criminal conduct.

The email subject: “Open Letter to Governor about Corrupted Campaign Team and Clayton Hee Scandal.”

The email purports to be from a supporter, described as an “active” member of HGEA and a Pearl City High School grad.

Of course, a supporter of the governor wouldn’t choose this kind of “open letter” as a forum for raising legitimate concerns. And it’s rather crude style and vague but politically salacious allegations mark it as a classic example of campaign dirty tricks.

The letter alleges Ige campaign insiders solicited former State Senator Clayton Hee to enter the governor’s race in order to “siphon off Hawaiian Votes from Colleen Hanabusa.”

It then goes on to throw allegations of misconduct and criminal acts at several people the letter identifies as key players in Ige’s campaign.

The language and style have all the trappings of an anonymous hit piece of the kind we have seen in a number of past high-level campaigns.

There’s a name and email address tied to the letter writer, who describes himself as a 1976 graduate of Pearl City High School. My initial check could not find anyone by that name in the school’s Class of 1976, and my attempts to verify a couple of other initial items also didn’t pan out.

I’ve sent an email to the address that was given explaining that I’m trying to verify the letter. It didn’t bounce back, but so far, no reply. I doubt that I’ll get one, but it’s always worth trying.

    For the love of reality:

Do yourselves a favor. Do not vote for Hanabusa. This the first, last and only warning. Ige makes dumb mistakes. Hanabusa is a dumb mistake. Look at Dooley’s stories if you don’t believe. Peace out.

I will never support Hanabusa because she voted NO to increase funding for education infrastructure, health care and jobs programs. Colleen voted yes for HR2810, $700 billion for military in 2018. Tulsi voted NO. Hanabusa missed important Legislative votes in Congress in Jan. Amendment S 139, Protect Fourth Amendment Rights. Limits on FBI search warrants targeting Americans under FISA. Finally her support for HR 1697, The ISRAEL Anti Boycott Act which ACLU condemns 7/18/2017. Prof. Cynthia Franklin, UHM, after listening to Colleens “response to the excellent challenges posed” at a Town Meet, ” that Rep. Colleen Hanabusa does not understand the bill, or what the difference between s boycott and a blacklist.” Supporting Apartheid Israel’s brutal racism is not Pono.

I recieved it too. Thanks for addressing. I didn’t know what to think, except as a Hawaiian I was insulted by the suggestion that I might vote for Hee because of it.
Did you get that one a couple months ago that was a smear of AG Chin- links to the videos where he is preaching to his fellow Evangelical Christians, whipped up in a religious fervor, decrying gay marriage (who knew?)?

Negative campaigns don’t work in Hawaii. Encourage Hanabusa to keep it up and her campaign self-destructs, especially when her platform is the polar opposite of Governor David Ige. Don’t let her develop every single inch of this island.
