The Great Chili Cookoff
House of Representatives, State of Hawaii
March 28, 2006

And the winner is....

No! Yes! The (suddenly) famous Ian Lind Hot 'n Healthy Kaaawa Black Bean - Turkey - Habanero chili took the top spot in the chili cookoff yesterday at the State Capitol. That's my steaming chili in the wonderful Griswold cast iron Dutch oven in the right corner of the table (yes, she's ready to lift the cover). The win wasn't for lack of competition--there were about 20 entries. After thinking it over, I'm guessing many entries used canned beans, while I cooked from scratch. Mine was the only entry using black beans. And it was the only claiming to be "hot", as in Habanero peppers. My secret ingredient was some of my mother's guava syrup as a last-minute sweetener to balance off the spicy hot. Whatever...it was my first cooking contest and I'll take the win any old way.
