Many of you are aware that our Manoa campus was the scene of a tragic suicide of a student last Friday afternoon at Holmes Hall. I want to extend my appreciation to those of you who reacted to this most unfortunate situation with professionalism and compassion.
We may never fully understand the circumstances that caused the violent loss of this young man. But we all can be adversely affected by the pressures of personal life, academic demands and financial stress, especially at this time of the year.
Please know that we have services available to assist you in coping with this tragedy, or to help you through difficult personal situations. Call our Counseling and Student Development Center at 956-7927 for help. Their services are confidential and free of charge for Manoa students.
No one in our campus community should feel they are alone in dealing with their problems.
Mahalo nui,
Denise Eby Konan
Interim Chancellor

I was stunned and saddened when I read Chancellor Konan’s email on Wednesday, May 9. This student’s death on May 4 was not otherwise publicized. Holmes Hall is the Engineering Building at UH Manoa. This morning, I called the office of the Dean of Engineering to find out more about what happened to this young man and was given the Chancellor’s assistant’s cellular phone number. The assistant indicated that the student is from the mainland. His family’s been notified. How often is this sort of thing happening at UH? What can we, as a community, do to prevent it?
