A press operator at MidWeek, which also prints the daily Star-Bulletin, said he was laid off when he arrived for work at 6 a.m. today.
He said the termination came without advance notice to himself or his union. It was effective immediately.
He believed at least three others involved in press or distribution operations were also cut.
Human resource staff were on hand to distribute final paychecks and provide written information regarding unemployment benefits.
He said seniority was not the basis for the layoffs.
“They have other criteria,” he said in a telephone call.
“I just wanted to go have a Bloody Mary and a Subway sandwich,” he said about his mood after receiving the news.
The Star-Bulletin will move to a smaller tabloid format next week, and will also shift to morning home delivery at the same time.

That sucks. At least SOME notice was in order. Making a person come in at 6 am and starting their day that way is just plain cold.
