Wednesday…Last minute push for civil unions, budget balancing, Lingle seen rising in GOP ranks, Falcon Cam, etc.

Supporters of civil unions are making a last-ditch attempt to rally public support and gather the last votes needed to resuscitate HB444 in the Senate.

With Hawaii legislators nearing decision day on how to balance the budget, here’s an overview of how other states are coping with the financial crisis.

Oh, speaking of the budget, perhaps this little tidbit from Newt Gingrich explains Gov. Lingle’s insistence that public workers bear the brunt of state budget cutting.

Q: Do you see any women emerging in the GOP leadership?

A: I would start, frankly, with Linda Lingle in Hawaii, who was a terrific governor who got re-elected in very difficult circumstances. You have Kay Bailey Hutchinson running for the governorship of Texas. If she wins that, she will automatically be a national figure because she’ll be the governor of the second largest state.

Newt named Lingle ahead of the GOP’s Sarah Palin.

But a reader questioned Newt’s facts:

WHAT?????? Difficult circumstances for Lingle in 2006? The economy was great then and Lingle’s competition for governor was a competitive JOKE. How does Newt get so many analysis requests from the media? my lord

Hey, stop worrying about the budget for a few minutes and check out the live Falcon Cam at San Jose, California’s city hall.

Here’s a media question. A friend questioned the headline on a Star-Bulletin story yesterday.

UH QB charged with threatening his girlfriend

The first sentence in the story clarifies that the player involved is a “reserve” quarterback, and my friend thought that fact needed to be reflected in the headline, which he felt was misleading.

Any thoughts?

Oh. The story goes on.

According to a police affidavit filed in court, the girlfriend told Kalauokaaea during the argument she was going to stay with her grandmother in Nanakuli.

While she was walking to her car, Kalauokaaea allegedly threw a glass at her and missed, and she left.

My friend quipped about the miss: “I guess that’s why he’s a reserve quarterback.”

Interesting story here from Indianapolis, where questions are being raised about the effectiveness of surveillance cameras in stemming crime.

And a brief update on poor Mr. Romeo. He’s asleep right on one of the chairs at our dining table. He’s a bit worse for wear, lots of scratches and bruises, I think. I’ve got him on antibiotics, and we’ve kept him inside for two days. He’s doing okay, but needs to stay far away from cat fights. He must have missed the fighting lessons when he was a kitten.

i hope romeo has a full and speedy recovery.

cat fights always make me cringe. sometimes the neighborhood cats get into it during the morning. my cat, who has lived indoors all her life, runs to the window when she hears something start. she’s like, ‘fight! fight!’

It doesn’t seem to matter these days whether a statement is true or not (re Newt’s comment on Lingle). I don’t know why people listen to politicians at all, but they do. It works. Newt’s statement will be the one Google finds when searching for Lingle.

It’s a strategy that Democrats and the Left have not learned. You just say stuff.

Notice how often Fred Hemmings’ letters appear in the Advertiser and how often he is sought out for comment. Nevermind that he is an endangered species, one of the few remaining Republicans left standing. He knows to write and to speak out, and so he is present in the dialogue while other views are absent. Singlehandedly he gives voice to Republican points of view. There’s a vacuum on the other side, relatively speaking.
