Thursday…Attention surf history buffs

I found several more items of interest to surf historians among my dad’s assorted papers, all having to do with the early days of the Waikiki Surf Club.

One is an announcement of the club’s formation written after “seven weekly meetings” had been held. Membership had grown rapidly from four to 110 members. The Waikiki Surf Club distinguished itself at the time by being open to “all ratial (sic) groups” and to women as well as men.

They had already arranged for surf board lockers on the beach, a club room in the Waikiki Tavern, and showers with 200 lockers.

Then there are the rules. Gambling was prohibited, along with “unnecessary noise, shouting, yelling or profanity”.

There’s a Waikiki Surf Club pledge, which begins:

To get together…is a beginning
To work together…is progress
To stick together…is success

And then there are lists of officers and directors for several years in the mid-1950s.
