Feline Friday…Mr. Toby takes center stage

Hey, not only did this site get a notice on the Sunlight Foundation Blog, so did the cats!

In Hawaii, ILind.net has a story about fundraisers thrown for Lt. Governor Aiona in California. And reflects on how events like this will be affected if Hawaii puts limits on nonresident campaign donations. Also enjoy the video of meal time with eight cats. It might just be me, but there seems to be a certain similarity between a political fundraiser and a house with eight cats.

Of course, it just legitimizes the time I spend following the cats around the house and yard!

CatsSo on to today’s Friday Felines, featuring Mr. Toby “in The Zone”.

Toby has “rediscovered” being in the house after a couple of years of spending a lot more time outside.

“The Zone” is something that happens in the privacy of our bedroom, most often during the occasional weekend afternoon nap, but sometimes in the middle of the night. I grabbed my camera when he entered The Zone last weekend.

Something sends Toby off into what we now refer to as “The Zone”. We know not what. He decides, for reasons known only to his tiny brain, that it is time for LOVE. He then goes into a sort of self-induced trance, plunks himself down on my chest, and begins that heavy rhythmic kneading with his front paws, complete with sharp claws. Very soon he’s drooling, and rubbing his face across my beard until we’re both pretty damp with cat spit. Sometimes he loses it and will try a little nip at my nose, which is always good for a quick human reaction.

If I do manage to disrupt him and get him out of The Zone, he’s surprised, like waking up out of a sound sleep. And I have to disrupt him, since it would be impossible to nap through a full cycle of Toby in The Zone.

This might date back to Toby’s kittenhood, when he would sit on me and accept lots of pets while we sat in bed. But it’s quite a different thing with a 16 pound cat on you.

In any case, click on the photo for this Friday’s Feline gallery.

my cat goes into “the zone” too, pretty much exactly as you’ve described it, without the drooling part.

When our cat Sweetheart- who adopted us by walking in the front door and never leaving 20 years ago- got in “I want the love” zone she would crawl up to my wife’s hand and writhe and push until she got her head under it. Then she’s move her head back and forth under the fingers, never giving up until my wife gave in and joined in with active head-scratching.
