This little chart displays statistics from my Feedburner RSS feeds. The green line displays subscribers, a fairly constant number between 400 and 450. The blue line, which has dropped dramatically over the past week, represents “reach”.
Reach is the total number of people who have taken action — viewed or clicked — on the content in your feed.
As you can see, reach has fallen off the table. Are dead links responsible?
Since a number of Internet Explorer users have reported links to comments, to single entries, and to the calendar and other sidebar objects do not work, this is an interesting coincidence.
Any additional ideas from the geeks among you would be appreciated.
I suspect some kind of conflict with something in the sidebars. If that is the case, one of my next steps has to be removing everything from the sidebars and then adding items back one at a time until the one that causes the problems is found.
At least, if it is one of those causing the problems.

I have no comment. Oh, wait, I just did.
considering that the majority of users browse with IE, i think you’re right on target… good idea to start clean and add back until you find the problem. good luck with that. you might want to consider what you did around the time of that drop off that might be affecting your IE readers.
I subscribe to you via RSS and Google Reader. Starting with the post titled “Two modest proposals regarding administrative costs…”, your posts started coming through as only three or four lines (rather than the whole post), and when I click on the post title (which used to take me here), I get an about:blank (in Chrome)/Untitled (in Firefox) window.
Hope this helps w/the troubleshooting!
Thank you, thank you.
I’m sure this means we’re getting closer to at least one of the underlying issues!
Ian, my experiences as of late mirror Dovid’s above. I also use Google Reader and lately it only displays the first few lines of your posts, and trying to navigate from the feed to the actual post only produces a blank tab. and the address of the new tab reads “javascript:void(0);” (sans quotes) as opposed to showing the proper address of your post. I’m using Firefox, so I don’t think it’s just an IE problem.

It could also be the CSS, particularly since WordPress templates attempt to detect what browser is being used. Also, if Microsoft put in a “security” patch, many browsers would be affected without any change on your blog at all.
For example, some links are generated from Javascript. Anything new that blocks some Javascript could do what you are experiencing.
I keep losing your Blog over and over Ian. I have to go in and re-subscribe…. much of this has been in the last month or so. Sometimes I figure I don’t see your notice in my inbox because you probably didn’t post anything – then I discover a whole raft of great stuff from you and have to do catch-up.
Today was a good example – I realized I had no Feline Friday and discovered I hadn’t seen anything from you since the 15th….. by the way, I read all your pieces in Civil Beat as well. Anyway – glad to know it’s not me and perhaps attributed to Microsoft patches??? Keep us posted in what you learn troubleshooting WordPress… Mahalo nui
