Ian, I got tired of my hosting service going down so when the Mac Mini Server came out I began hosting my own site.
The Mac Mini Server uses about 27 watts hour v intel based dell servers at 150-225 watts hour.
Overhead on a normal 1000 watt backup UPS is about 20-30 watts hour so picking the right backup UPS is needed. I found a Tripp-lite that uses less than 20 watts hour.
The Mac Mini Server comes with it’s own 500 gig backup drive, a fast chip, dual monitor port, and 4 gig ram plus the entire server software package with unlimited users < $1000. invested. This means you can also utilize it as a workstation if needed.
I converted my site making use of Vmware and Fusion, for Mac. That way if anythings goes wrong I can run my entire site as a virtual appliance on any Mac connected to the fixed IP I have.
This is not perfect and takes some tinkering and if your IP or electricity goes down your site is down.
I also mirror the server at a second location.
hmmm. WordPress.com is down — since 12 noon. Darn, I can’t access my own blog!
