Photo gallery: Kaaawa in August

Kaaawa in AugustWith September almost a week old, it was time to go back and select a group of photos to represent Kaaawa during the month of August 2010.

In addition to some of our great sunrises and beautiful ocean views, I’ve included some others showing bits of the spirit of the place.

    nice pics.

enjoy your regular pic 6 posts.

    being pickypickypicky, here’s one thought:
some pics feel like you’re stooping into a room with a low ceiling.
reason is that the main subject of the pic is too high in the shot.
eg, the pic of the house with the stone wall squeezed into the foreground.
or, the sunrise, with the road and wall squeezed into the foreground.

aside from the cramped feeling that is evoked, the squeezed shot makes you miss the truly wondrous side show that is simultaneously going on, which in Kaaawa is typically in the slopes behind or the sky above.

    eg, your sunrise pics.
the sun breaking the ocean surface is glorious.
but take a look at the top of the pics, where the sun’s rays are catching the clouds overhead and behind you.
    the colors are dazzling.

the sky above is a superior second point of interest to the road and fence.

so, tilt your camera up, drop the horizon toward the bottom of the picture, and capture the light show above.

same as when you’re walking the beach at dawn.
enjoy the sun breaking the horizon, then rotate 180 degrees and catch the light show behind you.

Yes, but…I think what you describe as the house with the stone wall squeezed into the foreground was a photo of the erosion in the wall along the ocean and at the edge of the highway. Or, if you’re referring to the houses with the “Sold” sign in front, it was the sign and its message that was the main subject. My problem with the untethered sky photos is just that–they lose their relationship to the stuff down here, where we are. A wider lens helps in those. But I’m limited by the camera and/or lens I carry in the morning. But, nonetheless, points well taken. Thanks.

Thank you for your gracious response.

By the way, Thomas Sowell couple columns ago did good commentary on the passing of Kodachrome

(Prescient Paul Simon three decades ago:
“you give us those nice bright colors”/ / /
“I can read the writing on the wall”).

So, Ian, don’t let this ol’ mama take your Kodachrome away.
