“The Moon over Haleakala” and “The Fund for Investigative Research-Maui” are new projects in advocacy journalism from the original publishers of Haleakala Times.
Publisher Ken Pinsky says they’ve put out three issues of the newspaper so far, with a fourth issue ready to go in October. The newspaper and its web site are supported–hopefully–by the new nonprofit fund, which uses the acronym FIRM.
According to a July editorial:
The Moon Over Haleakala focuses on the country areas of rural Haleakala; Paia, Haiku, Makawao, Pukalani, Kula and their surrounding communities.
The Moon advocates for personal self-sufficiency – and a local orientation to shopping, eating and living on Maui.
The Moon publishes stories and reports by Maui’s finest writers.
Pinsky says he intends to remain a free, alternative publication, supported by advertising and donations.
We give the Moon away for free, to everyone, because we believe our stories warrant the broadest possible audience and we believe our advertisers, most of whom are small business owners, deserve the broadest possible exposure at an affordable cost.
This is where you come in. In creating the Fund for Investigative Research — Maui, aka “the FIRM,” we’re reaching out to those who understand the contribution we’re making, those who are willing to match that contribution with one of their own.
It’s great to see this kind of effort emerging on Maui. Check it out.

We could use something like it on the Big Island.
We could use something like it on Oahu.
Kudos to Maui’s FIRM.
I’d go a step further than Larry, and suggest that newspapers be given the choice to be 501 c non-profits for tax purposes. This would mean that they could not make political endorsements!
If our television stations endorsed political candidates, like HSA does, could you stand it?
