Abercrombie & Leahey, Ellsberg in Hawaii, accessing the gov’s cell phone log, etc.

What did Governor-elect Neil Abercrombie do the day after his election?

He appeared as a guest on the PBS Hawaii program, Leahey & Leahey. And what a great interview! It was Neil at his most charming. Mr. Affability! Neil appears about a minute into the “On Demand” video clip.

You might want to put this one on your calendar. Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst whose leak of secret documents about the Vietnam War became known as the Pentagon Papers, will be in Honolulu to speak at the ACLU’s Davis Levin 1st Amendment Conference on Saturday, November 13. That link will take you to a registration form. It comes with this advisory–“Seats are limited.” Ellsberg is featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary, “The Most Dangerous Man in America,” which will also be screened during the conference.

I see that the trip is back on for those those San Diego teachers, who had been booked for an education conference in Hawaii before a media “Watchdog” triggered a spate of bad publicity. It seems that the image of teachers coming to Hawaii while the school district faces major deficits looked bad.

But now school district has discovered that this is a training conference for a program that requires teacher training, and the air fares are paid and nonrefundable.

It’s another example of Hawaii’s problem selling itself as a place for business conferences. Lots more work needs to be done to support this kind of marketing.

I notice that the Association of Capitol Reporters & Editors is joining the appeal in a Colorado legal case on the question of public disclosure of the governor’s private cell phone records of calls for government business during business hours. An appeal court ruled the records are confidential, and the case is now going to the Colorado Supreme Court. The organization is worried about the impact of an adverse decision, which could have impact beyond Colorado’s borders.

Talk about an unfortunate banner ad/story pairing. This is a partial screen shot from Mauitime.com. The “twit” headline is really just a pitch for their Twitter feed, but in this context it really hurts.

Okay, I’m out of time. We’re out the door for the walk to the beach and the sunrise. Perhaps more later.

  1. zzzzzz

WRT to SD teacher issues, I believe it was Walt Kelly who wrote, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

I think our tourist industry and government have been so successful at selling Hawai’i as a tourists’ paradise that mainlanders think that no one can get any work done here.

That strategy clearly has its drawbacks, both to the tourist industry as well as to efforts to diversify our economy.
