Any ideas?
A friend coming to Honolulu in June asked for suggestions of lotus ponds or fish ponds on Oahu, and I draw a big blank, but said I would seek your advice.
She’s a photographer, and her website mentions her lotus project.
I love to photograph people; it’s inspiring and a privilege to get close.
My lotus project of the last twenty years is my focus now.
A book is coming soon, the first of several, I hope!
And in a recent email, she wrote:
For 20 years I photographed on my parents big pond in the Sierra Foothills.; it was full of lotus.
Mom remembered one in Waialua when she was a girl going to visit her grandmother’s brother, Uncle Manini. That area is probably very developed now. It would be great to see some ponds on Oahu.
So, ideas? Please leave a comment with any suggestions you may have.

There’s an article about water lilies in today’s (5/25/2015) Star-Advertiser. Lotuses are discussed. The folks who are interviewed there might be able to give her suggestions.
Honolulu Academy of Art has a very nice one in the interior courtyard. It’s not large but its lovely.
The Byodo-In Temple has an impressive fish pond. Not much lotus, but the koi are amazing. You can buy fish food at the gift shop and create a swarm in front of your camera.

The lotus pond around the Punahou School chapel gorgeous.
There’s a BIG lotus pond in Hale’iwa, hidden, on private property. Off the road that goes to the boat harbor, on the left, maybe ask the people who live around there. The owners, some years back, had a Russian (I think) name.

If I remember correctly, the Board of Water Supply on Old Pali Road, has lotus in the pond there. It has been a long time since I took that route.
Moanalua Gardens for sure
I can’t remember for sure, but I think the garden at the East-West center has one

Kanewai Spring in Kuli’ou’ou is a beautiful fishpond with brilliant blue underground water that comes to the surface from underground. Contact the Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center for more info.
