Learning to deal with fake news

Fake news is definitely a growing problem.

The New York Times ran a good story over the weekend offering yet another example of how fake news is rather cynically created and spread (“A Pro-Trump Conspiracy Theorist, a False Tweet and a Runaway Story“). It’s a story in which Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono plays a role.

After reading the Times story, I took a quick look for resources to help identify and defend against this kind of fake news.

FactCheck.org offers a very good summary, “How to spot fake news.” It includes some very good advice.

Snopes.com, long a good source for separating fact from fiction, has their own “Snopes’ Field Guide to Fake News Sites and Hoax Purveyors.” It names some of the most prominent fake news sites.

And Facebook has their own helpful “Tips to Spot Fake News.”

If you have other favorite bits of advice, share it via a comment below.
