On Tuesday evening, Hawaii News Now finally got around to at least briefly reporting the story about the sale of the fishing vessel Rachel, a longline fishing boat owned one of Mike Miske’s companies.
Miske, of course, is currently in Honolulu’s Federal Detention Center, awaiting trial (along with ten co-defendants) on a long list of felonies. Miske is personally charged in 17-counts of the indictment, including four capital crimes related to the kidnapping and murder of 21-year old Jonathan Fraser in July 2016.
The story of the fishing boat’s court-approved sale was breaking news back when I reported it here on February 15, a little more than five weeks ago (“Court orders sale of Miske-owned tuna longliner“).
Here’s how Hawaii News Now pitched its story on the Rachel’s sale.
The HNN headline, and the story, are wrong, which HNN would have known had anyone checked their own archive.
It was Miske’s Boston Whaler, charmingly named “Painkiller,” that is alleged to have been used to dispose of Fraser’s body. Not the FV Rachel.
HNN’s headline and story were quietly corrected the following morning, when they ditched the assertion the boat had been used to in Fraser’s murder.

They were fishing for facts but got foul hooked.
HNN, ubiquitous and sloppy. Makes me crazy.
It seems all of the news outlets do not proofread anything they post online anymore.
Journalism on TV and online has been in a downward spiral for the past few decades.
All the journos here are running off for more stable employment as spokespersons in county & state government, Bishop Estate or big business.
We’re all in agreement that MSM is in freefall when it comes to factual and non-opinion reporting. There”s not ‘nuf money for investigative journalism, from insufferable ads taking up most of the bandwidth. Substack, Patreon, podcasts and websites are some of the areas where news hunters are going.
My landlord and I were watching the news when this story aired. We weren’t paying very close attention, mostly talking story over the news. We both paused immediately when they claimed this was the boat used to dump the body. ‘Those stupid f*ckas can’t even get an old story right,’ he blurted out, leading us into a good laugh at HNN’s expense. Sadly, he’s right and not solely about the Miske story. HNN is embarrassing, as are most TV news outlets.
And now the guy that built HNN is Mayor. God help us all.
