At the left of this photo, facing the camera, are SDS leader Jim Smith, religion professor Jim Douglass (just his face is visible), and Richard Tanimura (in white t-shirt with sun glasses), a student and member of the Hawaii National Guard who publicly opposed the war in Vietnam. Tanimura was among thousands of young men who had just been ordered to active duty for probable service in Vietnam, and within several weeks would leave the U.S. and take up residence in Sweden rather than report for duty.
