I finally got around to telling my mother that we named Duke after her father (my grandfather). She took it in stride. Then she solved our problem of the two-syllable cat name, which we had addressed by sometimes pronouncing his name Doo-ook. But my mother says the name, Duke, which has passed through the Yonge family for generations, sounded like Dee-yook, rather than a one syllable "Duke". The first syllable was soft and cut short. De-uke. Interesting. |
