The Auction Cats: Kili and Wally

![]() Ms. Kili |
Kili and Wally are sisters, known as the auction cats because we were driving into Honolulu on a Saturday morning in January 1998 to attend one of Marty McClain's estate auctions when we instead stopped to rescue these two kittens that had been dropped in the middle of Kahekili Highway, apparent victims of domestic abuse.
Ms. Kili is really sweet cat. All the other cats like her. But she is also a fierce and accomplished huntress, and prowls the overgrown area below our house for tender morsels that can be freshly delivered to us. If we're not home, she carefully deposits them on the floor under the desk where Meda's bag and other stuff for school are deposited. Kili knows her little gifts won't go unnoticed. She's the best ratter in the household today, and perhaps the only one of the current cats able to dispatch a large rat, a skill she has displayed on more than one occasion. Favorite sleeping places: between us on the bed, or on top of the DVD player where it's always warm. |

![]() Ms. Wally grew up to be...Queen! |
The only clue we had to Ms. Wally's later ascendance to the status of dominant cat of the household was her heroic battle against the daily dose of medicine when she was a tiny kitten. Little placid Wally turned into a terror whenever she saw the medicine coming. We treated her obstinance as a problem. We should have paid attention to what she was really displaying. Will power. Attitude.

Wally now is, as one of my favorite t-shirts says, "large and in charge."
But she can still move, as this sequence of Ms. Wally at play demonstrates. |

Surprisingly, Wally is also a big fan of laps. She'll jump into a waiting lap without provocation and stay until she gets dumped off or until she hears the sweet sound of fresh cat food falling into a bowl.
Kili was named for Kahekili Highway, the site of the original rescue. Wally got her name from the set of Wallace silver that we were going to bid on at the auction on the morning of the rescue. So we missed out on the silver and got Wally and Kili instead. What a score! |
