Thanks to events, I finally had the opportunity yesterday to meet John Lind, my "cousin" from Hana, who was here for the ceremony transferring Kahoolawe to state control. That's John on the left with the lei. We've been on parallel tracks but have not met before. A couple of years ago, after a visit to Scotland, my sister was able to piece together this part of family history--our grandfathers were first cousins who both came to the U.S. from Scotland. My grandfather went to California, and my dad later came to Hawaii, while John's ancestor landed in Hawaii. Our families have known of each other for decades but could not establish the connection until recently. So if they were cousins, then we are...well, in Hawaii we're cousins.
