Ruby & Daisy: After the roundup
Meet Kaaawa residents Ruby & Daisy (and Sandra, their person). We met them first when they were an extremely cute pair of puppies. We were reacquainted with them recently as an extremely rambunctious pair of dogs with a penchant for escape. One morning we found them running up the road behind the fire station, and walked them back down to their house. Then a couple of weeks ago they were across on the other side of Kamehameha Highway running and playing at Swanzy Beach Park shortly after 6 a.m. before trying to cross the busy road and get back to home. We intervened immediately to avoid a dog-car collision, and I used my stash of dog biscuits to win their attention and get them to follow. That rescue ploy has created its own problem as they now associate us with dog biscuits. So when Meda heard a funny sound a couple of mornings ago and turned around, there were Ruby and Daisy running along Kam Highway to catch up with us. So once again I lured them back to Swanzy while Meda went on a successful hunt for their person, who immediately came with their color coordinated leashes to round them up and head back home. Now we have to take care not to attract them in the direction of the road whenever we're in the vicinity of their house. Taking responsibility for the safety of other people's dogs is an unexpected burden in the early morning but one that we can't just walk past.
