About Ian Lind...

Ian Lind is a freelance writer and researcher who has worked as an investigative reporter, newsletter publisher, public interest lobbyist and advocate, peace activist, and more.

He was an investigative reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin from 1993-2001, and wrote an online journal of the newspaper's landmark struggle to survive the termination of its joint operating agreement with Gannett. Before joining the staff of the Star-Bulletin, Lind was editor and publisher of Hawaii Monitor, a monthly newsletter covering Hawaii politics from 1990-1993.

Lind previously served as senior aide to Honolulu City Council Member Neil Abercrombie (1988-90), executive director of Common Cause in Hawaii (1983-87), and director of the Hawaii Area Program of the American Friends Service Committee (1974-80).

Lind is a past chairman of the Honolulu Community-Media Council, and former chair of the American Friends Service Committee's National Peace Education Division Executive Committee in Philadelphia.

Lind's investigative stories have received both local and national recognition. His story, "Correctional Behavior: Union rights vs. human rights in Hawaii's only youth prison," was awarded the top prize for Enterprise Reporting for 2005 in the anual competition sponsored by the Hawaii Publishers Association.

Lind's series of stories on one of Hawaii's largest public employee unions received the Society of Professional Journalists/Hawaii Professional Chapter's top award for investigative reporting in print for stories published in 1999, and led to a federal corruption investigation, and the indictment and conviction of the union's executive director.

He was lead writer for the prize-winning series, "Locked Out: Hawaii Government's Slide Towards Secrecy," which earned the Edward Willis Scripps Award for Service to the First Amendment in 1997. He was a finalist for a prestigioius Gerald Loeb Award for business writing in 1994 for a series of stories on the diversion of state airport funds for purchase of a racetrack.

"The Money Game", Lind's series on University of Hawaii athletics, received the award for Best Investigative Reporting (Newspaper) in 1998 from SPJ/Hawaii Professional Chapter. Lind is also a five-time winner of the Star-Bulletin's quarterly Kilohana Award for Excellence.
