Asserting the "right to know":
"No Nukes" activists explore a former U.S. Army underground emergency command center
Aliamanu Crater, near Fort Shafter, Hawaii, c. 1976
| From about 1975-77, the American Friends Service Committte and catholic Action of Hawaii organized a campaign of education and protests aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of the nuclear arms race. Part of that effort involved calling attention to nuclear-related facilities in Hawaii, from the nuclear armed submarines and ships based at Pearl Harbor and nuclear weapons stored at Waikele and Lualualei to the comand and control facilities nearby. And one day we went in search of a former underground military command center rumored to exist just a short distance from downtown Honolulu. |
