Easter at Waikele 1976
| In early 1976, members of two Honolulu groups, the Quaker-based American Friends Service Committee and catholic Action of Hawaii, began a project to encourage public awareness and discussion of the dangers of the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. One approach to raising local awareness was to highlight nuclear weapons stored on Oahu. After researching several sites where Navy nuclear weapons were stored, members of the groups walked into an unsecured area adjacent to the Waikele Branch, Naval Magazine in Kipapa Gulch in central Oahu. At the bottom of the gulch was a helicopter pad sometimes used to fly weapons from the tunnels of Waikele down to the annunition depot at Pearl Harbor's West Loch. It happened to be Easter Sunday, a time for reflection. Here are some surviving photos of that day. -Ian Lind, June 2007 |
