I'm sure it's gone by now, consigned to memory, consumed by relentless development. But in 1971, it was pure magic, an urban oasis, a couple of old houses carved into rental apartments set within a Japanese garden rich with plants, koi ponds, mature trees and views across Pauoa Valley to the slopes of Punchbowl. It was located on that first long stretch of Pacific Heights Road before Kaola Way splits off to the right and returns to connect with Booth Road. It was invisible because it flowed from street level down the hillside to Star Road below. We found it only because Tom Davis, a friend from UH, was living there at the time. I'm sure someone made money on its demise, but the community ended up poorer for it. Finding these photos was a welcome trip back in time. |
