Comments made during the Maui workshop, from handwritten notes found in my files. A copy of the original handwritten version follows.

Might end up like the city of refuge….

I’ve seen it, felt it….can’t depend on others. Common people, we try to do it on our own. That way we know….

Kahoolawe for me is so much strong feeling. She is trying to tell us…strong waves were her, telling us to stay, find the important things.

It hasn’t been touched by the greed. Lack of love for people, and the Hawaiian people has what it takes…a place where we can build that love again. We can do anything we want, not only on Kahoolawe, in Hawaii and everywhere.

Kind of freaking you out, looking across the ocean at the buildings of Maui.

“I don’t think there’s room for any military activity.” attributed to former Maui Mayor Elmer Cravalho

One big problem is the fishermen…they only want it for themselves….

Just a resting place, not only for Hawaiians.

Like the old Hawaiians, you take what you need and you leave.

Perhaps the struggle is important—how do we make it a part of this growing spirit?

The feeling is—we, people, can stop destruction—bombing.

Against the law to respect the land. Good feeling, from that constrast between our defense of life and…
