A series of protests sponsored by the Hawaii Area Office of the American Friends Service Committee and catholic Action of Hawaii during mid-1970's sought to call public attention to the dangers of national policies fueling a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union.
Part of the protest strategy was to raise awareness of nuclear weapon storage in and around Pearl Harbor and other military facilities on the island of Oahu. The docks at Pearl Harbor's West Loch, and the nearby munitions bunkers, were thought to be key nuclear-capable facilities. At the time, the surrounding area for a mile or more was considered a "blast zone" and kept clear.
