Friday morning in Kaaawa

It was cloudy and threatening during our early morning walk this morning. On the way home, we finally had to deploy our umbrellas. And we even got a nice rainbow a couple of blocks from home.

Down on the beach it was still beautiful.

It won’t be raining for a while, and I miss the rain. I like this pic.

Perhaps for a Monday or Tuesday morning post, you could write a little about the apparent downward trend of the global economy and its implications for the local economy.

There is a very real possibility, it seems, that we could be going back in to another Great Recession, or even a Great Depression.

The question then won’t be what will become of the grand projects that we are so fond of debating, but what will become of basic services, like the police force and emergency services. What will become of all the civil servants and their pension funds (and all that free parking they get downtown)? Will layoffs of civil servants be the cost for the big projects to continue on?

What about education? Will people pull their kids out of private school? Will public schools be totally gutted? Or both?

What about food security? Will locally grown food become too expensive, or will it be cheaper than imports? Will we have to have our own gardens and become vegetarian?

But in terms of your area of expertise, what will become of journalism in Hawaii? More print and television monopoly? Or more Internet-based alternative news sources working together at reduced cost? Or both? (The dinosaurs were once diminutive, and only swelled into giants just before they went extinct. The rise of print and TV news monopolies in Hawaii might be a sign of their obsolescence, not of new forms of efficiency.)

Oh, yes, I almost forgot! Your blog rank is now “3rd in Hawaii”. That might have to do with the disappearance of the Star Advertiser from the Internet. People are being forced to scrounge for news. That could become a habit that will bite the news monopolies on their behinds….
