This is a repost of last year’s entry on Mother’s Day. Maybe next year I’ll look for other photographs. But I do really like both of these. So, for now….
Two mothers. Two amazing women. Two photos. Many more memories.
My mother, Helen Yonge Lind (1914-2013). I just recently ran across this photo, and it instantly became one of my favorites.
The photo was taken in October 1961, the date recorded in her careful hand in blue ink on the original slide. She’s in a chair in the living room of my parents’ home, where we live today. It’s the same spot in the room that served as her base five decades later, near the end of her life, where she sat surrounded by piles of mail, correspondence, newspaper clippings, books, miscellaneous knick knacks, several magnifying glasses, scissors, and a seemingly unlimited supply of pens and pencils.
And Meda’s mother, Margaret Renton Chesney (1923-2014). The photo was taken in early 1947, just after mother and daughter survived the F5 tornado that demolished their home in Woodward, Oklahoma. Margo dug Meda and herself out of the wreckage of the collapsed home, and was found by a friend who saw fires burning in wake of the tornado and had come to check on her. You can read more about the Woodward tornado here.
Happy Mother’s Day.
