Flashback: A Honolulu city tour c.1976

On a recent morning, I ran into an old friend from my high school class while having breakfast in Kaimuki. Later, he said he had found a copy of a city tour given by Professor Andrew W. Lind, who had become famous for his research into Hawaii’s people and culture, and wondered if this was my father.

I had to tell him that Andrew Lind wasn’t a relative, but that I was certainly interested in seeing the document.

It begins with this map, and continues through a dense seven single-spaced typed pages which describe what was seen at that time driving through the main parts of the central city.

It appears to have been written in 1976, based on references in the text.

It’s very interesting to see what areas have changed dramatically (Kakaako, for sure) and what’s more or less the same (Chinatown to Palama).

Anyway, reading through it and comparing in your mind what you would see today is an interesting exercise.

Just click on the map to see the full document.

I took Dr. Lind’s class in the early ’60s. The class tour by charter bus was fascinating. I still remember neighborhood characteristics and history that were highlighted. Makes the city a much more interesting place.
