We were out early Friday morning for the sunrise in Kaaawa. We weren’t disappointed. This was the view at Swanzy Beach Park at 5:57 a.m. The sun made its appearance a couple of minutes earlier.

Friday morning in Kaaawa
We make the same walk every day down to Kamehameha Highway, along the highway towards Kaaawa Beach Park, then down to the beach and over to the far end of Kaaawa, then turn around and do it in reverse, sometimes retreating to the interior roads to escape the wind. Same walk daily. But every day is different. It’s like a symphony with endless variations of the same score. Today was no exception. Cloudy, occasional rain, winds. Beauty. [Canon S90]
Green flash over Molokai
We saw a green flash at dawn in Kaaawa on Saturday even though the sun rose from behind the island of Molokai rather than rising across a clear horizon, where the green flash can usually be seen. I think we have seen this green flash over land only one other time.
The sun appears from behind Molokai only for a few weeks each year, around the time of the Winter Solstice.
In the top photo, taken a couple of minutes before the sun came into view, you can see the rays of light hitting clouds behind and above the island at the point where the sun is going to appear.
The bottom photo was taken just after the green flash.
With Kualoa having so much spiritual force in traditional times, I can’t help thinking that this alignment, coming at the Winter Solstice, must have attracted attention and been given significance.
Anybody know whether that’s really the case?
Thanksgiving morning in Kaaawa
Here’s a little glimpse of how Thanksgiving started for us, with sunrise viewed from the beach in Kaaawa. I have to admit that it seemed cold enough that I pulled a sweatshirt over my t-shirt before putting on my shoes and heading out. For those of you outside of Hawaii unfamiliar with our scale of hot and cold, this morning’s “cold” was probably just under 70 degrees (F) with a light wind following a rainy night.
