What islands do we see? A Google Earth answer.

Ah, technology has delivered a new way to answer the question of what islands we’re seeing on clear mornings when standing on the beach in Kaaawa and looking towards the rising sun.

Kaaawa ViewThanks to the several readers who suggested that Google Earth can be used for just such a purpose. And a special thanks to Jim Kelley-Markham for recording a brief “tour” that simulates flying a direct line-of-sight route from Kaaawa to Haleakala.

Viewing the recorded tour requires several steps.

First, download and open the Google Earth software.

Then Select Network Link From the ‘Add’ Menu. That brings you to a form. Give the tour a name, then in the space for “Link”, enter this address (I suggest to copy and paste it directly into Google Earth):

http://ilind.net/images_2009/Kaaawa-Haleakala.kmz

Add a description, if you like. Then click on OK.

You’re ready to view the tour.

There’s one point, in the first part of the tour, where the islands on the horizon take on the exact profile seen in the photo taken last week. So this is probably as close to the answer as we’re going to get.

If anyone else is able fiddle with Google Earth a bit and refine the view, please share your results!

You can open it in one step:

Past this in your address bar: ilind.net/images_2009/Kaaawa-Haleakala.kmz

When asked, “save” or “open with” – Select “open with” and then “Google Earth.”

    The tour should start.
