Morning rain, Google gets close, and incarcerating the cats

[text]Just after 4:30 a.m. it was raining here in Kaaawa, so I checked the current weather radar. You can see the rain that was sweeping across Oahu–it’s the yellow and red area on the map, with the red indicating heavier rain. You might have to click on the radar map for a better view in order to see the details.

That red spotch appeared to be just over us here in Kaaawa and extending up over the Koolau mountains. We thought it might wash out our early morning walk, but a half-hour later the rain eased up, then stopped.

It turned out that I didn’t have to open my umbrella during the hour we were out walking.

But you probably saw the big news–Google has expanded its Street View feature to include Oahu and Maui.

[text]They aren’t kidding. I was sure that the Google car never would have made it to our little road, a dead-end that extends just three houses in from the corner. But I was wrong.

That’s our concrete driveway on the right at the end of the road. Google didn’t get far enough for a look at the house, but they got pretty close.

I wonder if any of our morning dogs show up along the route we walk every day?

We rounded up all the cats last night and made them stay in until just a few minutes ago. That made for eight somewhat unhappy cats, although not totally so. Inside means food. Inside means sleeping in our bed. Inside means out of the rain.

Why the move inside’ Because we’re worried about Ms. Annie, who seems to have gotten addicted to being out and about. We’ve been catching only fleeting glimpses of her in the early morning, and then she disappears into the large empty field next door and doesn’t come home when called. The other day I didn’t see her at all, and the only way I know that she made a house visit overnight is that she left a dead mouse in my shower. That made for an interesting morning surprise.

So we’re attending to Ms. Annie and enforcing more house time. We also put out fresh catnip and have some additional toys to tempt the cats with, all an effort to make indoors a cat-friendly option. Wish us luck!

Nope. The cats seem to have separate territories for stuff like this.
Annie is the considerate one that leaves prey in the shower.
      Much easier to clean up.
Not so nice to look at first thing in the morning, though.

She is also the main hunter at this point in time.
She hunts. Others are now opportunistic only.
Meaning that Annie looks for prey. If a bird flies onto the deck and lands next to one of the other cats, they might think about doing something. Might not.

I spent several hours last night using Google Street view. It is pretty amazing. Interesting how they took the time to blur license plates on cars. I wonder if they have some recognition software that does that automatically or if they had to go through each frame manually?

Does anyone know when they did their drive-around through the neighborhoods? I expect it took some time. From the look of my house, I assume it was about three months ago in my ‘hood.

Meanwhile, the overhead Google Maps pictures were taken about 4 years ago. As a I cyber-strolled down the street of my childhood, spinning around 360 degrees every few steps, I could see ongoing construction. When I switched to overhead view, I would see homes which were torn down in the last 3 years, so the views wouldn’t match. It can create an odd, “out of time,” disjuncture.

From what I read in the FAQ-Privacy section on the google page announcing the street-level feature, I believe the face and plate blurring was automated.

My husband recalled seeing the google camera van a few months ago, so he looked up the image in the area where he saw it… sure enough, there is our car driving up 10th Ave!

Pretty amazing and a little spooky to see such an accurate view of my neighborhood.

I saw them driving by a few months ago on the leeward side. It was a small car with fancy camera on a roof-mount tripod with multiple lenses pointing in all directions. It said google on the side of the car. This was mid-morning

I remembered where I was at at the time so when they went online I found myself at that exact spot I saw them drive by — with face blurred.

It may have taken them quite a while for the project — so others might have much older pictures.

Can’t force my animals outside at night here anymore. could be that icy wind blowing down off the mountain.

Google didn’t come down my street – maybe because there’s a private road sign at the beginning? I guess no one told them that that only means that the road isn’t maintained by the government.
