Worry about feline diabetes

Bad news on the cat front.

Ms. Maka, Duke’s sister who was adopted by friends back in 2002, has been diagnosed with feline diabetes.

Just six months ago, these two look-alikes were both 19-pound walking hairballs.

But yesterday we got the news of Maka’s diagnosis.

She had been put on a much-needed diet, and began losing weight. And kept losing it until it was obvious something was wrong.

It’s probably quite relevant that their mother, Ms. Cybelle, died suddenly of previously undiagnosed diabetes soon after Duke and Maka were weaned.

Now Duke’s earned himself a diagnostic check-up to see whether he exhibits any early warning signs, besides being substantially overweight.

Any advice appreciated from folks who have dealt with this disease.

    oh no!

i saw a show that covered dog diabetes, and from what i understand (for dogs), it can be well managed, as long as the right dose of insulin is determined and the disease is known. i hope duke does OK! lucky you know now.

My late cat was diagnosed with feline diabetes in 2005. The vet put her on a diet with RD Feline dry food, and I gave her an insulin shot every morning. You can get Humulin N and syringes at Long’s, although it’s not cheap, especially when it’s for the cat and not you (covered by insurance for humans.) The vet monitored her glucose levels and we changed the insulin units accordingly. After awhile, I was able to gauge levels myself. My cat lived another 4 years and lived for a total of 17 years, longer than I expected.
