Attention, cat people: Kika needs a rescue!

That’s Kika, left, who shared a household with Maka, sister of our fat cat, Duke, until her recent death.

[text]Kika is a nice cat, a six-year old neutered male, but he has “issues”, according to his people, and they’re at their wits’ end.

My friend, Peter, says Kika started sometimes ignoring the cat box about two years ago. Not every time, I’m told, but every few days he’s been leaving cat poop around their condo. Sometimes there’s cat pee as well, something we’re well versed in.

Both Peter and his wife are busy professionals, but they’ve been trying hard to cope. Here’s how they described the situation a few weeks ago.

Believe me, we have tried everything, and we are now on our third vet, who also acknowledges the difficulty of the situation. This weekend I am talking to what Peter & I are calling the cat whisperer (Dr. Basko, a holistic vet from Kauai) and after that consultation (and I am not optimistic), I am sure we will need to make a hard decision.

I write because if anyone wants a personality plus cat (whom we hand-raised) and has an outdoor situation and/or thinks they can handle/cure him, I would be so grateful. I would love a good home rather than the alternative. I am pretty distraught about giving him up, especially to the Humane Society as that will not end well, I’m sure, but after tiptoeing around poop piles in the middle of the night, we are kind of done.

They have been unable to find a medical problem behind Kika’s behavior, nor to find the behavioral trick to put an end to the inappropriate behavior. At this point, they feel they can’t deal with the situation any longer and, with a major trip planned at the end of April, they are desperate for a solution.

Peter says:

None of the no-kill shelters seem willing to accept other than feral cats. Can you put out the word on the blog which we know has a lot of cat lovers, to see if anyone will do this for us.

And, further:

We would gladly pay for cat food for a time for anyone who would accept him. If this alternative totally does not work out, we would take him back rather than force someone else to deal with the ultimate solution.

If we didn’t already have eight inside-outside cats with their own issues that send us out shopping for Nature’s Miracle in the industrial-size jugs, we would probably invite Kika home.

I’m hoping someone out there will have a solution that includes a long life for Mr. Kika.

Please feel free to contact me for further information or to contact Kika’s people directly.

Have they tried keeping the cat in a kennel and letting him out only for brief moments for a little while. I know that it works with housebreaking a puppy but am not sure about cats. Just a thought. Hope it all works out.

Aue! I can completely identify with what your two friends are going through! My husband and I have two indoor cats, both of whom we hand-reared. One of our cats, Heke, goes through periods of pooping and peeing outside of his box. Every couple of months our entire household is thrown into utter upheaval trying to deal with him. Like Peter and his wife, Heke has no medical issues. We’ve tried calming sprays (suggested by our vet) and, just recently, were considering putting him on feline Prozac. However, after learning more about the negative side-effects, we decided not to use it. We even considered sending Heke to live with our friends who have a large farm in Punalu’u. We thought the Great Outdoors would give him the freedom (and pooping and peeing space!) he needed. However, when we discovered that our friends’ next door neighbor’s dogs had a tendency of killing some of the local cats, we felt we simply couldn’t put Heke in a dangerous situation.
Our latest solution–and it’s a last ditch effort– is to build a cat enclosure (my husband will be busy doing that this spring break!) We figure that in the event Heke does poop and pee outside the box, it’ll at least be contained and easier to clean.
I truly hope your friends are able to find a solution that is commensurate with theirs and their cat’s needs.
