The Waikiki Surf Club was just a year old when they put on a winter event featuring a six-mile surfboard race that sent paddlers from Waikiki out around Diamond Head and back.
The winners of that inaugural race posed for this photo. It’s just one of several photos from that long ago Christmas that I found among my father’s papers.
From left to right: Rabbit Kekai (#1), George Downing (#2), Robert Krewson (#3), Herb Bessa (#4), Edward Whaley (#5), Wally Froiseth (#6), Dorian Paskowitz (#7), Frank Freitas (#8), Blue Makua (#9), Russ Takaki (#10).

Hau`oli L? H?nau –
I sure wish I knew what Uncle Zulu (Gilbert Kauhi) looked like back in the days. I don’t think I would be able to identify him in a picture even if he was in one. 🙁
That was supposed to be Hau’oli La Hanau but I guess WP doesn’t like Hawaiian fonts.
Oh, whadda cool picture. All da’ boys when they were boys. Knew Bobby Krewson when his hair was white, but still handsome and full of fun stories of the good ol’ days.
Thanks for sharing.
I know Bobby Krewson from the Kahala Hilton days. I remember Don Ho speaking at Bobby’s services saying that “he was one handsome bugga”
Wish he were still with us, he would know all the guys and gals.
Yup, that’s my daddy—and I sure do miss him………daily!!!
Fond memories of Herb Bessa and Bobby Krewson and recognized both immediately in the lineup….and Rabbit, too….maybe I’m not senile after all.
